The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the City of Cape Town and the Western Province Sport Council will be hosting the Western Cape Mind Games on Saturday, 30 May 2009 at the Bellville Velodrome.

The aim of the Mind Games is to promote games and codes, which are not as popular or as well supported by the greater community and businesses as football, cricket or rugby. Mind Games include Klaverjas, Scrabble, Chess, Dominoes, Draughts, Bridge and War Games.

While Draughts, also known as Checkers is popular in all communities, Klaverjas and Dominoes are indigenous to the greater Cape community. Chess is the oldest of the codes and is well known for producing its champions. The games are all inclusive, as they can be played by everybody, young and old, able bodied and disabled.

The growth potential of the games is huge. The games can also contribute to mental development of the community as they encourage strategic and tactical thinking.

Sport is commonly perceived as a physical activity, while this is mostly true, it is also a mental activity and nothing demonstrates this as deliberately as Mind Games.

The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Mr Sakkie Jenner, will officiate at the prize giving ceremony at the end of the games.
