Health MEC, Pemmy Majodina host stakeholder engagement session
6 May 2009
The honourable MEC for health, Ms Pemmy Majodina engaged with departmental stakeholders on the progress of the department in line with the Sheshisa Programme at the Regent Hotel on Friday night 1 May 2009. The Department of Health was one of the four departments that the provincial government identified for acceleration of service delivery. Addressing the stakeholders, the MEC said “I am very happy to say that without any fear of contradiction we have achieved the goals that we had set for ourselves.”
The department was faced with many challenges, and to address those, the department immediately embarked on Sheshisa Programme which started on 1 October 2008 to 31 March 2009, premised on the acceleration of health service delivery to the community of the Eastern Cape. The Sheshisa Programme focused on five priority sub programmes of the department which are the following:
* Tuberculosis (TB) control and management
* HIV and AIDS
* Pharmaceutical services
* Functionality of health facilities: Clinics, Community Health System (CHSs) and hospitals
* Health facilities’ maintenance
Within this period, the department opened clinics as well as hospitals. The MEC visited depots to ensure drug availability as well as efficient and continuous drug distribution to health facilities. The department also partnered with private companies to ensure acceleration of service delivery and also to bridge the gap in health services between public and private healthcare.
The MEC expressed her appreciation to all the stakeholders including the staff of the department “my appreciation goes out to all staff that still continues to serve our people and embody the Batho Pele principles. They have made all of this possible. I felt your warmth and you have natured me throughout, lets put Eastern Cape on the right trend”, she concluded.
