Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Z Pallo Jordan congratulates the creative film making team of “Gugu and Andile” for scooping three awards at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria.

21 April 2009

Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Z Pallo Jordan congratulates South African film director, Minky Schlesinger for scooping the Best Picture in an African Language Award at the African Movie Awards in Abuja, Nigeria.

Our congratulations go also to Litha Booi and Lungelo Dhladhla who complemented this success by taking the prizes for the most promising actor and most promising actress, respectively.

The film was nominated in ten categories from a total entry of 304 films. The selection of films was exceptional from many African countries such as South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Liberia, Ghana and Nigeria.

The competition provides yet another platform for African film makers not only to network but to highlight and acknowledge their creative output. It is a noteworthy that the event was graced by the presence of legendary African-American Hollywood superstars, including Angela Basset, Danny Glover and Forest Whitaker.

Significantly, the awards serve as recognition of movie and acting excellence within Africa and the Diaspora.

There is no doubt that this is a giant leap for African film makers to tell the African story to the international community and South African film makers are making their mark as important contributors to this continental effort.
