14 April 2009

This morning the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Firoz Cachalia, initiated a meeting with the provincial leadership of South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (SATAWU), Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to prevent public violence and to protect the rights of all interested parties.

It was agreed that the striking workers will be allowed to gather, peacefully, at the Beyers Naudé Square (Library Gardens) to enable the trade union leadership to address the workers on the issues affecting them. It was also agreed that the trade union leadership would address workers on the importance of peacefully exercising their rights of association and assembly and to co-operate with the police with the view to prevent public violence.

A channel of communication between the police and the leadership of the workers was put in place for this purpose.
