Burgersdorp residents are breaking the shackles of poverty by accessing integrated services and information
24 March 2009
On 20 March 2009, Burgersdorp Thusong Service Centre was officially opened by the Premier of the Eastern Cape Mr Mbulelo Sogoni in Gariep Municipality in Burgersdorp. The aim of this One-Stop Government Service and Information Centre is to bring government information and services closer to communities where these services are needed most.
In this centre people will get a variety of government services in one place. A number of departments available in the centre including the Office of the Premier, Department of Health (DoH), Department of Sports Recreation Arts and Culture (DSRAC), South African Police Service (SAPS), home affairs and social development are already operating. More than 2 000 residents of Burgersdorp celebrated the launch with a sense of appreciation since the centre is going to save them time and money of travelling about 55 kilometres to Aliwal North for government services.
Premier Sogoni pleaded with the youth of Burgersdorp to utilise the Tele-Centre, a computer lab within the Thusong Centre sponsored with 15 computers by Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) and Office of the Premier's (Provincial Information Management Unit). "These computers will assist the youth especially unemployed graduates to search for employment opportunities on the internet for free," he added to loud applause.
