Limpopo to celebrate World Wetlands Day
16 February 2009
The Departments of Agriculture and Economic Development, Environment and Tourism in collaboration with other stakeholders such as the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF), Polokwane and Capricorn District Municipalities will celebrate World Wetlands Day in Ga Molepo village on 19 February 2009.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year to mark the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and groups of citizens at all levels of the community use this day to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of the value of wetlands and popularise strategies of conserving them.
Wetlands are areas where the water table is at, or near the surface of the land and water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life. This year's theme is 'Up stream-downstream wetlands connects us all.'
The MEC for Agriculture, Mme Dikeledi Magadzi will be the main speaker at the event.
