Statement by the MEC for Education Ms Angie Motshekga on the death of learners in Tshwane

12 February 2009

The MEC for Education in Gauteng Ms Angie Motshekga notes with sadness the passing away of four learners whose car was involved in a terrible accident yesterday morning in Tshwane South District. The learners were on their way to school.

"I am deeply hurt and saddened by what happened and on behalf of the whole family of the Gauteng Department of Education extend our deepest condolences to the schools affected, the parents of the learners and their fellow classmates."

"I want to assure the people of South Africa and the province that we will continue to build best schools in our communities so that our young citizens can be able to access quality education at their doorsteps," said the MEC.

The learners were travelling from Olievenhoutbosch to Laudium when they met their untimely deaths. They are from Jacaranda and Hillside Primary schools.

The Tshwane South District will send a team from the Education Support Services to the schools and the families affected to offer psychosocial support and any needed assistance.
