Tomorrow, Eastern Cape MEC for Roads and Transport, Gloria Barry, will hand over certificates of appreciation to 124 provincial traffic officers working in the Cacadu district, who made their district the most productive one and contributed in the 30% decrease in road accidents throughout the province.

The event will take place at the Straundale Traffic Station in Port Elizabeth at 9h00.

These offices worked together with other law enforcement agencies and become the most productive team as they caught 2 943 people for various traffic law violations in the Cacadu and metro areas.

Their main focus was:

1. drunken driving (priority number one)
2. reckless or negligent driving
3. moving violations (barrier lines, blind rise overtaking)etc
4. major route selective enforcement
5. passenger overload
6. misuse of government vehicles
7. safety belts (front and rear)
8. all other relevant offences
9. illegal number plates
10. use of cell phones
11. stray animals

Throughout the Eastern Cape, this resulted into the following achievements:

- A total of 15 716 drivers were caught for various traffic law offences
- 1 006 people were arrested for drunken driving
- 501 vehicles were suspended for unroadworthiness
- 822 stray animals were taken off the road
- 579 stray animals were confiscated on N2, N6, R61 and R63
- 5 052 summonses worth R1.8 million were issued for various traffic law offences
- 8 911 people were reached through stray animal education programmes
- 200 red flags were distributed to shepherds.
