President Kgalema Motlanthe condemns military coup in Guinea Conakry

26 December 2008

Pretoria - South African President and current Chairperson of Southern African Development Community (SADC), Kgalema Motlanthe, today, Friday, 26 December 2008 joined the African Union (AU) and the international community in expressing an outright condemnation of the reported military coup in Guinea Conakry.

In this regard, President Motlanthe said "the reported military coup in Guinea Conakry, following the death of President Lansana Conte on Monday is an affront to peace, stability and democracy in Guinea Conakry."

"Accordingly, we join the international community in calling on the military rulers to immediately hand over power to the Speaker of the National Assembly in conformity with the constitution of Guinea Conakry to lay the basis for the holding of democratic elections" continued President Motlanthe.

"In this context, the military rulers must cease their pursuance of the current members of the Cabinet as well as the Prime Minister and help return the country to the rule of law, constitutionality, peace and security" concluded President Motlanthe.
