Statement by Social Development Minister on irregular distribution of application forms for social grants
22 December 2008
The Minister of Social Development Dr Zola Skweyiya has called upon members of the public to apply for social grants from offices of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) nationwide only, and not from unauthorised persons, including representatives of political parties.
This follows allegations that a political party, Congress of the People, was handing out application forms for social grants at Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg.
The only institution authorised to administer social grants in the country is the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)."Social grants are a government responsibility. No political party should distribute forms or engage in any work linked to the distribution of grants or any work of the Department of Social Development and SASSA. We will take action against anyone involved in any activity that violates the social assistance legislation or who acts in any manner that may perpetuate fraud and corruption in the social grants system."
“We urge members of the public to call our toll free line 0800 60 10 11 for information or visit the nearest offices of SASSA or the Department of Social Development,” Minister Skweyiya said.
Minister Skweyiya has run a successful campaign against fraud and corruption in the social grants system.
“I urge SASSA staff nationally to remain vigilant and report any fraudulent looking applications to law enforcement agencies without delay,” Minister Skweyiya added.
