Interns in the arts, culture and heritage sector secure permanent employment
17 December 2008
The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Ntombazana Botha invites members of the media to a certificate award ceremony. In terms of the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA) programme, lack of skills is one of the major constraints of economic growth and development.
In 2007 the Department of Arts and Culture launched an internship programme in order to address the skills shortage in the arts, culture and heritage sector. The internship programme involved scarce skills areas in the sector such as museology, entornology, heritage, archives, library science, conversation management, curatorship, arts administration and others. About 62 interns were successfully placed in the department and its associated institutions such as the Freedom Park and the State Theatre. Significantly, 63% of the interns have secured permanent employment.
