MEC Gloria Barry to welcome 51 new young traffic officers, open a junior traffic training centre and launch the 2008/09 Arrive Alive Campaign
11 December 2008
On Friday, 12 December 2008, Eastern Cape Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Roads and Transport, Honourable Gloria Barry, will officially launch the 2008/09 Arrive Alive Campaign at Babs Madlakane Hall in Uitenhage at 10h00.
During the event, MEC Barry will officially welcome 51 new young traffic officers, who graduated last week from the Port Elizabeth Traffic College. Twenty (20) of them had received bursaries from the Department of Roads and Transport, while the rest had studied privately.
"These new traffic officers are the product of our Skills Development Plan, which seeks to increase the number of our traffic officers, especially in this period of preparing for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. As we speak, the department is going through a list of candidates as we want to ensure that by January 2009, we start training 160 young people in phases to become traffic officers by 2010. They will be deployed in special operations during the tournament," says MEC Barry.
These new officers will also mount a roadblock known as "Operation New Broom". MEC Barry is expected to further hand over five high powered BMW vehicles to the newly established Special Task Teams for drunken driving operations, which have been sponsored by the Road Traffic Management Corporation. She will also open the KwaNobuhle Junior Traffic Training Centre worth more than R700 000 to train children on road traffic safety.
