South African President Kgalema Motlanthe to visit the Eastern Cape
9 December 2008
South African President Mr Kgalema Motlanthe will be in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 10 December, to address the official closing ceremony of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign. The closing ceremony will be held at Mlungisi Township in Queenstown (Indoor Sports Centre). The event will start at 10h00.
Joining President Motlanthe will be Eastern Cape Premier Honourable Mbulelo Sogoni and his entire cabinet. For the past eleven years the South African government has been actively participating in a United Nations endorsed 16 Days of Activism on No Violence against Women and Children campaign. The 16 Days campaign has been used to create a national movement to raise awareness, to address policy and legal issues, to campaign for the protection of survivors of violence and to call for the elimination of all forms of gender based violence.
In South Africa, civil society, business and government come together for 16 days of action for 365 days of safety for women and children. In the past campaigns, funds have been raised for distribution to organisations providing services to women and children who have experienced violence-making the campaign a tool for strengthening helping institutions. Funds are distributed through the foundation for human rights.
