For most people, December symbolises the end of the year and the ushering in of the festive season. It is also that time of the year when our spirits are filled with joy, inner peace and fulfilment for the things we have achieved throughout the year. It is therefore not only time for harvesting, but also time for giving, laughter, worship and fellowship.

On behalf of the provincial government and the people of our province, I wish to take this opportunity to extend warm wishes to every citizen of the province a happy, peaceful and prosperous festive season. Whilst this is a joyful season, I appeal to everyone to take care of themselves in every respect.

In the same vein, we wish to thank everybody who made 2008 a productive year that it was, whether they are traditional leaders, public servants, sports people, businesspeople, religious leaders, media, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or community leaders. Not least important in these, are the parents of this nation who continue to be guardians of ubuntu and morality on our children.

We are proud of your tenacity and pray that you will always keep on doing the good work which has distinguished this province as one of the most homely and liveable places in our country today.

As the leadership of the province, we will certainly rely on your strength and support as we enter the year 2009. We say this conscious of the fact that, nothing meaningful can ever be achieved by government alone, without the participation and guidance of all our social partners.

We wish you and your family a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

In equal vein, I further encourage you to exercise your democratic right to vote in next year's general elections, in order to make our democracy safer
