Justice Minister to launch the Access to Justice and Promotion of Constitutional Rights Programme

8 December 2008

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mr Enver Surty MP will launch the Access to Justice and Promotion of Constitutional Rights Programme (Strengthening Civil Society Participation) which is a partnership between the Department of Justice, South Africa and the European Union (EU). The launch will take place on Wednesday, 10 December 2008 at the Orange Farm Multipurpose Centre at 10h00.

The Access to Justice and Promotion of Constitutional Rights Programme was developed as a result of the Joint Country Strategy Paper agreed upon by the Government of the Republic of South Africa and the European Union which sets out the development strategy for the period 2007 to 2013. The objective of this programme is to contribute to the strengthening of democracy by improving access to justice and promoting constitutional rights through civil society organisations, using the Foundation for Human Rights as the department’s implementing agency.

The programme is scheduled to begin in April 2009 and will run for an operational period of 36 months, followed by the 12 month closure period. The launch will also mark the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the end of the national campaign of 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children.

Among the guests expected to attend the event is the Ambassador of the European Union His Excellency L Briët.

Media is invited to be part of the launch.
