27 November 2008

As part of celebrating 16 Days of Activism on no Violence against Women and Children campaign, The Gauteng Department of Community Safety together with Gun Free South Africa, Gauteng National Taxi Alliance, Gauteng Taxi Council, Top 6 Management, Johannesburg Regional Taxi Association, and the City of Johannesburg are working towards declaring all taxi ranks within Gauteng gun free zones. This attempt to make taxi ranks gun free zone will be piloted at Faraday Taxi Rank.
As a build-up towards the launch to make Faraday Taxi Rank a gun free zone on the 9 December 2008, several activities are planned to consult with taxi operators, commuters and the public in general.

Activity 1: Workshop

The workshop is targeting taxi operators and its main objectives are:
* To consult operators on the policy and allow for inputs
* Workshop operators on gender based violence
* Workshop operators on conflict resolution

Activity 2: Public awareness

Volunteers will engage operators, commuters and public on the need to declare public nodes, particularly taxi ranks gun free zones. This will be done through distribution of pamphlets, stickers and a questionnaire that seeks to determine the public's view on declaring taxi ranks gun free zones.
The initiative is part of the implementation plan of ensuring that public nodes are gun free and gender sensitive particularly to women and children.
