Anti-crime Summit

27 November 2008

Minister for Safety and Security Nathi Mthethwa will make the opening address at the Anti-Crime Summit organised by the Ministry for Safety and Security on Monday, 1 December.

The purpose of the summit is to improve the department's service delivery thought the building and consolidation of partnerships with relevant stakeholders in crime prevention and combating to reduce the levels of crime in South Africa. Emphasis will be placed on identifying practical and implementable solutions that in the short-term and medium-term can address key areas in line with identified gaps.

To achieve this, a wide range of stakeholders will be participating in the summit. Apart from senior government and South African Police Service (SAPS) officials, invited stakeholders range from representatives from business, community police forums, organised labour, media, faith based organisations (FBOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), research institutions and traditional leaders.

This approach is informed by an appreciation of the principle that no police force or service can deal effectively with crime if it does not enjoy the support of the communities. Effective and efficient service delivery of the Department for Safety and Security, in the arena of policing and crime prevention, is significantly dependent on effective partnerships with stakeholders and role players.

Media is cordially invited to cover the plenary sessions on both days.
