Launch of greening of Sekhukhune and Food for Waste Programme
27 November 2008
The Minister of Public Works, Mr Geoff Doidge and the Limpopo MEC for Agriculture, Mrs Dikeledi Magadzi will launch the Greening of Sekhukhune and Food for Waste Programme pioneered by Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
The greening of Sekhukhune is a project initiated and funded by the National Department of Public Works and Limpopo Department of Agriculture (LDA) as part of the new expansion area of the environment and culture sector of the EPWP. The project is about the establishment of a nursery and planting of 40 000 fruit and indigenous trees in the five local municipalities of the Greater Sekhukhune District.
The objective of the project is to address environmental degradation arising from poor socio-economic conditions exerting pressure on the natural resources of the Greater Sekhukhune District.
The focus of the project will be on individual homes, low cost housing, clinics, schools, municipal offices, parks, multipurpose community centres, libraries, community gardens and farms. The project is expected to provide the Greater Sekhukhune District communities with training as well as short to long-term employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, the Fetakgomo Local Municipality Food for Waste Programme will focus on waste collection in exchange for food parcels. The aim of this project is to keep the environment free from pollution and enhance the livelihood of the community through provision of food security and protection of the vulnerable.
