Mpumalanga to launch the Heritage, Greening Mpumalanga and tourism flagship
26 November 2008
The Premier of Mpumalanga, Mr Thabang Makwetla will launch the Heritage, Greening Mpumalanga and Tourism Flagship Programme at Songimvelo Nature Reserve on 2 December 2008.
This is one of the five flagship programmes that were approved by the executive council of the province in October 2006 and subsequently presented by the Premier during the state of the province address in 2007. The flagship aims to preserve the cultural and natural heritage, as well as the environmental resource base of the province in order to optimize socio-economic development through the promotion of sustainable tourism.
As a province, we are inspired by a common tradition of close association with our sustaining earth, and through the launch of this flagship, we come together as government, communities and private sector in recognition of our joint responsibility to protect and preserve our cultural and natural resources for the common good of all.
Specific objectives in this regard are to:
* Acknowledge, record, transform and preserve the Mpumalanga province's natural and cultural heritage.
* Conduct spatial planning and management of the natural environment through the greening programme.
* Optimise the Mpumalanga province's tourism potential to facilitate economic growth, sustainable development and job creation.
* Ensure a clean and healthy environment to the people living in and visiting the Mpumalanga province.
* Create awareness on the importance of efficient usage of cultural and natural resources to ensure a "good life" for future generations.
* Align, integrate and co-ordinate all initiatives and activities within the three components of the flagship programme to achieve the overall programme goal.
The tagline for the Heritage, Greening Mpumalanga and Tourism Flagship Programme is "Naturally Mpumalanga" in celebration of diverse and unique cultural and natural heritage that makes Mpumalanga a natural choice for a discerning tourist in search of unforgettable experiences.
