MEC Gloria Barry to launch the Koukamma household contractors programme and hand over 50 bicycles to local schools during her constituency outreach programme next week

Eastern Cape MEC for Roads and Transport, Honourable Gloria Barry, will officially launch the Koukamma Household Contractors Programme and hand over 50 bicycles to local schools during her constituency outreach programme to be held at the Louter Water Community Hall on Monday, 24 November 2008, at 10h00.
These bicycles form part of the Department of Roads and Transport's Shova Kalula Bicycle Project, which assists learners who travel long distances to reach schools. The identified schools in that area include:
Braamrivier Primary in Joubertina: 11 bicycles
Misgund Primary: 27
Qhayiyalethu Senior Secondary in Kareedouw: 12
The launch of the Household Contractors programme marks the expansion of the department's Sakha Isizwe Community Based Transportation programme, which focuses on the poorest of the poor, employing women headed household representatives throughout the province.
To date, more than 8 000 Sakha Isizwe Household contractors have been appointed to do weekly roadside maintenance work such as bush clearing, roadside cleaning and grass cutting. These poor Household Contractors previously had no source of income and through this programme their dignity has been restored.
They will be deployed as follows:
Area: Karredouw
Number of households: 40
Access roads: New rest main and Mountain View, Main Road, Buite Road, Protea Road, and Kagiso Road
Maintenance to be done: Cleaning of culvets, filling of potholes, grass cutting, cleaning of stormwater drains
Area: Ravinia (Joubertina)
Number of households: 30
Access roads: Alfa road, Main road. Omega road and Heide
Maintenance to be done: Grass cutting, cleaning of sidewalks and litter clearing
Area: Loterwater
Number of households: 20
Access roads: Flood roads, Apricot Road, West Road, Boundary Road
Maitenance to be done: Kerbing, Cleaning of storm water drains and grass cutting
Area: Misgund
Number of households: 20
Access roads:
Church Street, R62 turnoff including the R62
Maitenance to be done: Pothole patching, Kerbing Cleaning of storm water drains and grass cutting
Area: Krakeel
Number of households: 10
Access roads: School road and Lang Street
Area: Coldscrean
Number of households: 12
Access roads: Access roads
Maitenance to be done: Grass cutting and bush clearing
Area: Stormsriver
Number of households: 16
Area: Nompumelelo village
Number of households: 12
Area: Woodlands
Number of households: 20
Access roads: R102, Eester Rivier, Robehoek, and Kwaaibrand
Maitenance to be done: Pothole patching, cleaning of culverts and storm water drains
