Visit by Swedish Ambassador
11 November 2008
Parliament’s National Assembly Speaker, Hon GL Mahlangu-Nkabinde is to receive a courtesy visit by Swedish Ambassador, HE Ambassador Peter Tejler, on 12 November 2008.
The purpose of the visit is to strengthen relations between the two countries’ respective legislatures with regard to their activities. South Africa and Sweden legislatures share similarities in that they both have a proportional representation element to allocation of seats to Members of Parliament. They differ however on the number of houses consisting parliament. South Africa has two to a single one by Sweden.
The two countries also share membership of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). IPU is an International Organisation comprising of 146 Member Parliaments of sovereign states. It has acted as the focal point of worldwide parliamentary dialogue since 1889. In some ways it can be described as the United Nations of parliaments.
