Eastern Cape Premier encourages foreign nationals to join Police Community Forums

14 November 2008

Eastern Cape Premier Mbulelo Sogoni has called on all foreign nationals to actively partake in the Community Policing Forums (CPF).

The Premier was briefing the media on the plans of the recently established Justice Crime Prevention Security (JCPS) Cluster to combat and uproot crime and xenophobic violence in the province.

The participation of foreign nationals in Community Policing Forums is seen as a vital factor for mobilising communities against these barbaric acts.

The Premier said "participation of foreign nationals in CPFs is encouraged and is working well with the Somali community in Nelson Mandela Metro, Chris Hani and Buffalo City."

The people’s willingness to work with the foreign nationals in these areas shows the community’s positive attitudes in playing a major role to restore peace and stability in the province and that can be a lesson to the rest of the country.

Premier Sogoni mentioned that the MEC for Safety and Liaison will prepare a programme to visit areas which are affected by xenophobic violence.

This is part of the Eastern Cape government's attempts to intervene and condemn any acts of that regard. It confirms the government’s commitment to work towards ensuring that no stone is left unturned on the matter.
