Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to announce new Late Birth Registration process
12 November 2008
Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula resumes the Imbizo programme with a visit to the Nonibe village and surrounding communities in the Peddie district of the Eastern Cape on Thursday, 13 November 2008.
Following a relatively successful voter registration weekend, Minister Mapisa-Nqakula will pronounce on the department's new Late Registration of Birth (LRB) process. The LRB is aimed at affording bona fide South African citizens 15 years and older - who have never registered for a birth certificate in their lifetime - an opportunity to do so. A birth certificate is a pre-requisite for anyone who wishes to apply for identity document (ID), a key enabler to accessing other government and commercial services.
The minister will, for the first time since the new regulations were introduced on the LRB process, announce all the aspects of the process, whose other intention is also to close loopholes used previously to obtain South African identity documents fraudulently.
