Travelling to school becomes a “grand voyage” - special schools get brand-new buses
6 November 2008
Travelling to school will now be a fun and enjoyable experience for learners in 17 special schools. Seventeen (17) brand new buses worth a hefty R22 million will be handed over to special schools by the MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Mrs Ina Cronjé.
The Department plans to have a total of 58 buses for special schools by February next year with an overall cost of R55 million. The buses are air-conditioned and will be converted to accommodate learners who are physically disabled. These buses will display colourful and bright branding. It is for the first time that the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education purchases buses for special schools. Previously, these schools used their subsidy funding to purchase buses or kombis to be used for school transportation. The handover ceremony will also be attended by school principals as well as a group of learners from the benefiting schools.
The event will take place as follows:
Date: 11 November 2008
Venue: HS Ebrahim Special School, Northdale, Pietermaritzburg
Time: 11h00
Kindly contact Ntokozo Maphisa on 079 495 8657 on or before 9 November 2008 if you require transport.
After the abovementioned event the media will move to Durban to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understand between the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and Shanghai. This will see new partnerships being forged and cemented between some of the best performing schools in Durban and those in Shanghai.
