Eastern Cape Premier Sogoni urges citizens to deepen democracy by registering to vote

3 November 2008

Eastern Cape Premier Mbulelo Sogoni has made a clarion call to the people of the province to go to voter registration stations in numbers to register for 2009 general elections. Premier Sogoni was addressing about 3 000 residents who are attending the National Council of Provinces seating (NCOP) at the Lady Frere Stadium in the Chris Hani District Municipality.

Premier Sogoni said "I urge all of you to go out and register to vote this weekend. This will empower you to be in a position to participate in the elections in 2009." Premier applauded people for participating in the NCOP process and said it was important for deepening democracy. The NCOP is in Lady Frere to listen to the people as part of its programme of taking parliamentary sessions to the people. The theme for the NCOP seating is "Parliament Empowering Communities for Poverty Eradication".

Over the next few days residents of Lady Frere and surrounding localities will discuss issues that affect their daily lives with members of parliament, ministers and Members of Executive Committee (MEC). The focus areas for discussions will among other things include agriculture, education, health and issues of local government.
