MEC Motshekga pays tribute to educators through sports and cultural games

28 October 2008

The Gauteng MEC for Education, Angie Motshekga, will host a sports and cultural event to mark the end of the World Teachers Month at the University of Johannesburg on Thursday, 30 October.

About 2 000 teachers in the province will attend and take part in the event, which will include competitions in popular sporting events such as soccer and netball. Other cultural activities include poetry, debating and traditional and western dancing.

World Teachers Day is celebrated throughout the world on 5 October every year. In Gauteng, celebrations began on that day and are continuing throughout the month with various districts staging games to prepare for the finals at the University of Johannesburg.

Speaking about the event, MEC Motshekga expressed her gratitude to teachers in Gauteng for their dedication to the teaching profession.

"We are very proud of your commitment and contribution to the development of our young people to become leaders and professionals in various areas for the benefit of the country. Teaching is the profession that gives birth to all other professions and we would like to urge the young people of this province to take up as a career," she said.
