Minister of Housing Lindiwe Sisulu will hand over 1 000 Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes in Delft Symphony, Cape Town, on Thursday, 23 October 2008
22 October 2008
This event is the first 1 000 home handover, marking the completion of repairs to the illegally invaded homes and the accelerated release of homes to the rightful beneficiaries.
It is also a return to Delft Symphony where the first ever BNG home in the country was handed over to Aunty Katie Hoffman in June 2007. The BNG homes are 40 square metres big with two bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom.
The N2 Gateway Project will deliver nearly 11 000 homes in Delft, 2 400 of them in Symphony. Approximately 9 000 of the 11 000 total houses will be given free to families qualifying for the full subsidy from government according to the agreed ratio of 70 percent to former informal settlement residents, predominately from Joe Slovo and 30 percent to families living in backyards in nearby communities. The remaining homes represent a combination of affordable bonded homes and rental stock, for families that do not qualify for the subsidy.
