Premier Sogoni and Member of Executive Council (MEC) Barry to hand over the Mthatha airport site for upgrade and launch the AB 350 Bus Operations in the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD), Mhlontlo and Nyandeni municipalities
22 October 2008
As part of the 2008 October Transport month and imbizo focus week programmes, Eastern Cape Premier Mbulelo Sogoni and MEC for Roads and Transport Ms Gloria Barry will officially hand over the Mthatha Airport site to contractors for a R60 million upgrade on 24 October 2008 at 10h00.
The ceremony will mark the launch of the airport renaming process, whereby local stakeholders and communities will participate in the discussion about the new name of the airport. This process will be led by the Eastern Cape geographic names committee.
This initiative is in line with the Blue Skyway Aviation Strategy, which was unveiled by the Department of Roads and Transport in 2006 in an effort to maximise the potential of the Bhisho and Mthatha airports and bring new life to the rural airstrips within the province.
During this event, Premier Sogoni and MEC Barry will launch the Africa's Best 350 Ltd bus operations in the King Sabata Dalindyebo, Mhlontlo and Nyandeni municipalities, where 16 brand new 65-seater buses have started operations. These buses form part of phase one of the project, where 56 buses have been purchased to operate in the former Transkei region, including the Mbizana, Umzimvubu and Matatiele municipalities.
