Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka announces her resignation as Deputy President of the Republic and as a Member of Parliament

Deputy President, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, announces today (Tuesday, 23 September 2008) that she has handed in her resignation as Deputy President to outgoing President Thabo Mbeki.  She has also handed in her resignation as a Member of Parliament to the Honourable Speaker of the National Assembly.  
 
In resigning, the Deputy President believes that there is merit in affording the new President an opportunity to choose his/her Deputy in the best interest of work within the Presidency.
 
The Deputy President has also cited personal reasons for her resignation, and has indicated her commitment to a smooth handover and assist the new team should the need arise.
 
Mlambo-Ngcuka would like to thank the people of South Africa for the support and kindness shown her in the performance of all her duties.
 
The Deputy President would like to thank President Thabo Mbeki and the ruling party for the opportunity provided to her to serve the country.
 
In doing so, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka also welcomes the announcement by the ANC Secretary General that the organisation understands that deployees do sometimes withdraw from their work for personal reasons.
 
Mlambo-Ngcuka also congratulates the President-elect Minister Kgalema Monthlante, with whom she has had a short but fruitful working relationship within the Presidency. 
 
"Having had an opportunity to serve first as a Deputy Minister, Minister and now Deputy President, I have been privileged to be part of the economic and social transformation of this country.   I hope in a small way that I have contributed towards the vision of a better life for all."
 
"I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve the ANC government and will always be of service to the people of South Africa," Mlambo-Ngcuka said.
