Progress on social responsibility projects aimed at poverty eradication from April to September 2008

The Department of Environmental Affairs through its Social Responsibility Projects manages the following projects:

Sustainable land based livelihoods
This programme looks at the following:
* rehabilitation of wetlands
* promotion and creation of community conservancies
* rehabilitation of landscapes to conserve natural resources
* creation of livelihoods opportunities through the sustainable utilisation of natural and cultural resources.

Working for the coast
* rehabilitation of coastal dunes and estuaries
* cleaning up of beaches and upgrading of tourist facilities
* development and upgrade tourism infrastructure of tourism infrastructure along the coast.

People and parks
* focus on protected areas to conserve natural resources and cultural heritage
* develop and upgrade infrastructure in protected areas
* develop benefit sharing models for communities living in and around protected areas.

Working for tourism
* support the development of viable tourism products
* create opportunities to increase small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME) involvement in the tourism industry
* develop and upgrade tourism infrastructure
* create tourism routes and establish tourism information centres and signage.

Working on waste
* create mechanisms for the protection of environmental quality
* create sustainable livelihoods through recycling of waste
* support use of enviro-friendly waste disposal technology.

Key Performance Area: No. of job opportunities created
Target for 2008/09: 14 000
Progress from April to September 2008: 4 940

Key Performance Area: No. of permanent jobs created
Target for 2008/09: 400
Progress from April to September 2008: 450

Key Performance Area: Increase no. of learners registered on the learnerships, skills development programmes and short courses

Target for 2008/09:
* 30 Learnership
* 180 on skills dev. programmes
Progress from April to September 2008:
* 7 learnerships
* 95 skills dev. programmes

Key Performance Area: Implement the Social Resp. Infrastructure and National Prog
Target for 2008/09: * 40% of budget allocated to nodal points/project consolidate municipal areas
Progress from April to September 2008: 45% Budget allocated to nodal points
* 57% allocated to Project consolidate municipalities

Target for 2008/09: Rehabilitate 70 wetlands
Progress from April to September 2008: 95 wetlands

Target for 2008/09: Rehabilitate 470 hectares of land
Progress from April to September 2008: 381 hectares of land rehabilitated

Target for 2008/09: Create 350 SMME
Progress from April to September 2008: 76 created
