Drivers set to showcase their driving skills at the driver of the year competition

The Mpumalanga Department of Roads and Transport will be hosting an annual provincial driver of the year competition on 22 and 23 August 2008 at Gert Sibande Region, Cassim Park in Ermelo.
The competition is aimed at promoting and stimulating excellent driving skills. It is further aimed at improving the standard of heavy motor vehicle drivers while preventing and reducing the number of accidents involving heavy motor vehicles in Mpumalanga.
The competition has now reached its final stages and all the regional winners and the runners up will be competing against one another in various categories
in the provincial level. The competition consist of categories which include rigid category, male driver category, female driver category, artic category, rigid with four wheel trailer, and 3.5 ton delivering vehicle.
Drivers are required to excel in four fields that include, pre trip inspection, theory test, road test and track to win in each category. The pre trip inspection test consists of a physical check and inspection of the vehicle to test the driver's knowledge and habits regarding roadworthiness and safety. A theory test is conducted to test the driver's knowledge of the rules of the road.
In a case where a driver is unable to read and write, an oral test is conducted.
Fifty eight drivers will be competing against one another for the first prize position in each and every category.
The first price in each category is R15 000, second prize is R10 000 and the third prize is R5 000. The overall winner will receive R10 000.
Member of Executive Council (MEC) Jackson Mthembu will be awarding prizes to the winners. The winners in each category will represent the province in a national competition to be held in October this year at Port Elizabeth.
