2010 Stadium under spotlight as Minister scrutinises worker safety

25 August 2008

Workplace occupational health and safety at 2010 stadium construction sites come under scrutiny this week as Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana inspects the Soccer City – venue of the upcoming World Cup opening ceremony in two years' time.

Mdladlana's visit forms part of the week-long swoop of the construction sector by the Labour Department in various parts of the country until Friday, 29 August.

The construction sector has gained notoriety as one of the high risk industries – recording high accident and fatality incidents almost every day. A few weeks ago a worker died when a concrete slab fell on him at the construction site of the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The Minister and his team will commence their inspection at 08h30. The media is invited. Details are as follows:

Date: 25 August 2008
Time: 08h30 to 11h00
Venue: Soccer City (Near NASREC)
