Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka to address the first Gender Indaba for the Public Service, Birchwood Executive Hotel and Conference Centre, Boksburg

Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will on Monday, 18 August 2008, address the first Gender Indaba for the Public Service at the Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg, as part of the Women's Month.

The first Public Service Gender Indaba is hosted by Ms Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, Minister of Public Service and Administration, under the theme "Engendering the Public Service Policy". The Gender Indaba will attract senior public service female managers, representatives from the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM); African Union Commission on Women, Gender and Development; SADC and the South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID).

Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka's keynote address will focus on "Government's role in gender equality and the empowerment of women."

The objectives of the Indaba are as follows to:

* understand ways of mainstreaming gender in all policy formulation and implementation
* share approaches of implementing gender initiatives into the public service plans
* ensure that all sectors of government are held accountable for their commitment to implement the eight step principle action plans of gender equality and women empowerment
* learn skills to successfully mainstream gender
* support workplace gender initiatives.

A case study on the Burundian Experience in engendering Public Service Policy in the context of Post Conflict Reconstruction and Development will be shared by HE Ms Rose Nduwayo, the Burundian vice Minister of Human Rights and Gender. Minister Fraser-Moleketi will share with the delegates the history and the role of women in the development of the Public Service.

The outstanding women managers at senior management level within the public service will be presented with awards at the gala dinner, as a gesture of acknowledging the exceptional work they continue to perform.
