Mdladlana puts spotlight on workers' plight
5 August 2008
Exploitation of workers in the Western Cape plus poor working conditions of mine employees in Gauteng are among a host of workplace injustices that Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana will be dealing with during his interactions with employers, workers and community leaders respectively in the two provinces on a single day tomorrow (Thursday).
Mdladlana's visit of Lwandle township residents near Somerset West follows a request by a ward councillor in the area.
Incompliance claims against employers include salaries as low as R300 per month, working hours of up to 13 hours per shift without proper remuneration, unprocedural retrenchments and disregard of the Unemployment Insurance Act provisions.
In Gauteng the minister will be engaging the management of Grootvlei Mine near Springs (Thursday) relating to matters described in the report that was compiled by Department of Labour (DoL) following their inspection at the mine.
