Leopards Rugby holds clinics at Oppenheimer Stadium

21 July 2008

The North West Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, in partnership with Leopards Rugby Development League, will on Saturday, 26 July 2008 host coaching clinics for children (boys and girls) ranging from under 13 to16 and youth under 19 years at Oppenheimer Stadium in Orkney.

The aim of the clinics is to introduce and develop the sport to underprivileged children in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. Rugby is one of the 12 priority codes identified for development by Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA). The
12 priority codes earmarked for developments are, cricket, rugby, football, netball, hockey, boxing, basketball, athletics, golf, swimming, table tennis and gymnastics.

During the departmental budget speech for 2008/09 financial year, MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture in the province, Ndleleni Duma, emphasised a need to further engage relevant stakeholders in identifying and ensuring development of talent in the province. This, he said, would be achieved by the involvement of the Provincial Sport Council, which is expected to play a major role in ensuring that relevant governance structures are in place.

Since it embarked on a decentralised service delivery strategy, which emphasise output at district and service points level at the beginning of 2007/08 financial year, the Department is continuously engaged with stakeholders to reach all citizenry of North West province. Media is invited to attend and cover the event arranged as follows:
