North West Provincial Legislature to confer over the Second-Hand Goods Bill

From 4 to 8 August 2008 the North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Transport, Roads and Community Safety will be holding public hearings across the province on the Second-Hand Goods Bill (B2-2008). The purpose of the public hearings is to solicit views and inputs from stakeholders and members of the public.

The aim of the Bill is to regulate the business of dealers in second-hand goods and pawnbrokers, in order to limit trade in stolen goods, to promote ethical standards in the second-hand goods trade and to provide for matters connected therewith.

The portfolio committee is lead by Honourable Hantise accompanied by Honourable Groenewald and Honourable Baloyi along with a translator, committee administrator, legal advisor and communications staff. Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) are also accompanying the delegation in the different districts.

The first public hearing is taking place on 4 August in the Dr Modiri Molema District in the Mafikeng Municipality at the Barolong Boo Ratshidi Community Hall from 9h00. On 5 August the committee moves to the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District in the Tlokwe (Potchefstroom) Municipality at the Dr Govan Mbeki Hall in Ikageng. The following public hearing will be held in the Dr Ruth Mompati District in Vryburg at the Huhudi Hall in Huhudi. The final public hearing will take place in the Bojanala District, in the Rustenburg Municipality at Olympia Park in the Super Suite Hall. All public hearings commence at 9h00.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend.
