North West Provincial Legislature Progresses with Women's Month celebrations

4 August 2008

As a kick-off to their Women's Month celebrations the North West Provincial Legislature held successful regional workshops from 28 July to 1 August 2008. The theme of this year's event is "Parliament empowering women through poverty eradication".

Twenty-four women were selected per region with a total of approximately 100 women expected to attend the Provincial Workshop scheduled to take place on 8 August 2008, at the North West Provincial Legislature.

The thematic areas under discussion are reflecting on previous women's parliaments; women and macro-economic policy; the role of social movements and regional women's organisation in eradicating poverty and economically empowering women and the links between the increased political representation of women and poverty eradication.

Eleven participants will be selected from the provincial workshop to represent the province at parliament with the 12th being one special woman achiever identified by the political principals at the Legislature. There will also be a strong leaning in favour of rural and impoverished participants and participants will be drawn from each of the municipal districts in the province.

The Women's Parliament 2008 will be held on 15 August 2008 in Mafikeng at the North West Provincial Legislature at 10h00. The 12 women selected will represent the North West at Parliament in Cape Town 18 to 20 August 2008.

Media are encouraged to attend what promises to a vibrant workshop.
