Deputy Environment Minister to address Inaugural Indigenous Knowledge System Expo

Media is invited to the address by Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism at the inaugural Indigenous Knowledge System Expo on Thursday, 7 August 2008.

Organised by the Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with national government departments as key stakeholders, the Expo will run from 4 to 9 August 2008, at the Transvaal Museum in Pretoria. The Expo will convene under the overarching theme "Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Works". This momentous expo intends to reflect fully the tangible outputs of the government initiatives in the promotion, development and protection of indigenous knowledge systems.

The 7 August 2008, has been dedicated to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) to convene a workshop session on its perspective on Indigenous Knowledge Systems. Several interesting presentations and exhibitions will take place. The session is open to the public, stakeholders and media.

The Bio-prospecting, Access and Benefit Sharing Regulations of 2008, National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act and international discussions of access and benefit sharing will come under the spotlight on 7 August 2008.

The contribution of indigenous knowledge to bio-prospecting and the Hoodia case as a practical example of traditional knowledge of plant use leading to benefit sharing agreements will be presented.

Enabling the Management and Promotion of Cultural Heritage in National Parks, will also be discussed and the case of SANParks will be highlighted.

The promotion of Indigenous and Ornamental and the Related Indigenous Technologies for Conservation and Landcare in Gauteng is another pertinent programme item.
