Women's Indaba

The National Department of Housing and the Northern Cape Provincial Department of Housing and Local Government are gearing up for the National Women in Housing Indaba which will be held in Kimberley, in the Northern Cape from 7 to 8 August 2008.
The Indaba seeks to facilitate the empowerment of women to actively participate in the housing delivery chain. The theme of the Indaba is "Celebrating women in housing delivery – Changing Gear".
As a build up to the Indaba, the annual "Women's Build" initiative is presently taking place in China Square, Galeshewe in Kimberley. The Women's Build started on Monday, 28 July and continues until 6 August 2008. Premier Dipuo Peters and MEC JF van Wyk officially launched the Women's Build on 28 July 2008.
The "Women's Build" entails the actual construction of 52 houses for beneficiaries by 22 women contractors in the Sol Plaatje Municipal area. The beneficiaries include women headed households, women with disabilities, elderly individuals and women who have children with disabilities. The 52 houses are being built in commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of the Women's march to the Union Buildings in 1956.
During the Women in Housing Indaba, which will be held on 7 to 8 August 2008, Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu will hand over the 52 houses to the beneficiaries in China Square, the Indaba will be held at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Kimberley where delegates from all the provinces will be present.
The private sector, Sol Plaatje Municipality, South-African Women in Construction (SAWIC), Housing institutions, community members, stakeholders and partners in the construction industry are all part of the build that have either sponsored a house/houses, building material, volunteers, etc.
The media is invited to attend the build which is currently taking place at China Square, Galeshewe in Kimberley until the 6th of August 2008.
