Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation to host a public viewing spectacle for Telkom charity cup

23 July 2008

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with the West Rand district municipality will host the public viewing of the Telkom Charity Cup. The event will take place at Mohlakeng stadium, in the West Rand on Saturday, 2 August 2008 at 10h00 and will be preceded by performances from local artists such as DJ Ganyani, Mgedeza and many more.

This year's tournament will take place on the 2nd of August 2008 at the Mmabatho stadium in the North West. Gauteng will use this tournament to help propel the development of football and build the love of soccer as well as raising spectator support for football in South Africa and Gauteng in particular.

During the last world cup in Germany, about 18 million people had watched games on screens; six times more than those who were in the stadiums. They were also considered as an economic potential for local communities who wish to do business by selling food and drink during the matches.

"We are working with municipalities and business to develop public viewing sites where members of the public will be able to view matches across the province. The concept will also allow us to plan for cup final matches featuring Gauteng teams that are played outside of the province," says Gauteng Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Sports Arts Culture and Recreation, Barbara Creecy.

Fan parks will ensure more than a million people come to South Africa, despite the limited tickets available for matches at the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Organisers are pulling all stops to ensure the public viewing becomes a spectacle event and are calling on Gautengers to join in this spectacle. Entrance to the event is free and gates will open at 9h00.
