Anti-Tik campaign rolls-out on a full scale

17 July 2008

Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool has called on communities to work together with the police in order to make a dent on the ongoing fight against tik. The devastating drug has affected throngs of youth across the province are now engaging in drug related crimes.

The second leg of the Tik Off – There is Hope campaign which was unveiled last week at the Parow Mall, will see Charlesville Mall from 18 to 20 July came alive with exciting education and awareness activities aimed at the youth.

“Tik has devastating effects on our youth and the Western Cape Government is determined to work together with the police and our communities to stop the destruction which Tik is sowing across our province,” Premier Rasool explained.

"We must break parents' silence and denial of their children's drug habits. There needs to be education about this because even if we crack down on the high-flyers who supply the tik, we will still have addicts.

"We must cut addiction because as long as there are addicts, we will always have people who have to feed their habits by stealing, prostituting themselves and even selling drugs themselves."

On the significance of this week’s Tik campaign, Premier Rasool said: "The 'Tik Off - There is Hope' campaign is crucial to creating awareness about the effects of 'tik', especially on the youth of our province but also the effects on families and entire communities. Whilst government and the police are hard at work trying to crack down on the supply of drugs such as ‘Tik’, we cannot and will not succeed if communities do not join hands with us. Equally important is the battle to cut the demand for drugs like ‘Tik’ - and that is why awareness campaigns such as ‘ Tik Off - There is Hope’ are so important."
