South Africa's Ambassador to Oman awarded highest honour

15 July 2008

Oman: South Africa's Ambassador to Oman, Abba Omar, was decorated with the prestigious Al Numan Award Class One by the Sultan of Oman.

The honour is awarded to diplomats who have played an exceptional role in promoting relations between their respective countries with Oman. The award is named after Oman's first Ambassador to the United States in 1840.

Mr Abba Omar took up his posting as South Africa's Ambassador to Oman in September 2003 where he helped to establish SA's first Embassy in Oman. He previously served as the Deputy Director-General of Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).

Omar's tenure in Oman ended on 30 June 2008 and he will be taking up a new posting in the United Arab Emirates as South Africa's Ambassador to the country.
