North West Public Works' gear-up for Limpopo sports festival
3 July 2008
Mafikeng: Our own soccer and volleyball teams have vowed to defend their titles at this year's National Sports Tournament scheduled to take place in Limpopo from 17 to 20September.
Public Works men's soccer and volley ball teams are the defending champions from the tournament at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in the Western Cape last year.
This was the soccer squad third championship in a row, a feat they hope to continue this year. Should they win the floating trophy will head for the cabinet for life.
The volleyball team on the other hand won the title for the second year running. Retaining the trophy again in Limpopo will mean the team gets to keep it.
Yvonne Phago of Public Works team said the teams were determined to retain their titles.
"It is really important for us to win the games as this will mean that both trophies will be ours to keep and that is an accomplishment we are looking forward to," she said.
Phago said although they will be competing against some strong opponents, the odds are still in their favour as reigning champions.
In preparation for the games, all departmental regions are expected to converge at Olympia Stadium, Rustenburg, on Saturday at 10am for player selections.
The selection will however not be limited to the defending champions' teams as other codes like netball and ladies' soccer will also feature prominently.
The tournament is an initiative of the National Department of Public Works and the Department of Transport, Roads and Community.
Initiated in 2004, the competition is administered by the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) with the aim of enhancing healthy living among employees through recreation.
