Volunteers for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009

The FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 will be taking place on 14 to 28 June 2009. This Festival of Champions as it is affectionately known, will be contested by eight nations namely; South Africa (host nation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™), Italy (FIFA World Cup Champions), Egypt (Africa Cup of Nations Champions), Spain (Europe), United States of America (CONCACAF), Brazil (South America), Iraq (AFC) and the winner of the OFC (currently being played). Of the five venues where the matches will be played, two are based in Gauteng, namely; Ellis Park and Loftus Versfeld Stadia.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC), on behalf of the host cities and FIFA, is recruiting volunteers who will be deployed to assist in making this tournament a success. About 1 000 and 800 volunteers are needed for Johannesburg and Tshwane respectively for the Confederations Cup only in the areas such as language, information technology, media, accreditation, spectator services, transport, hospitality, logistics, administration, etc.
Any South African citizen who will be 18 years old or older on or before 1 March 2009 is eligible. The volunteers will include professionals, youth, students, unemployed, people with disabilities and retired citizens.
The application form is available online (http://www.fifa.com/southafrica2009) from 1 July 2008 till 31 August 2008 and people can call the call centre at 0800 525 252 for assistance. There are also 42 access centres in Johannesburg spread across its regions and 32 access centres in Tshwane included are community libraries, two school libraries (Gauteng Community School Library and Mahlasedi Masana School Library) and Umsobomvu Youth Fund Centre.
