Media statement: The Presidency pays national tribute in remembrance of victims of violent attacks
2 July 2008
President Thabo Mbeki will, tomorrow, lead the country in a nation tribute in remembrance of foreign nationals and South Africans who suffered in the recent violent attacks. This is in the interest of promoting peace and tolerance.
The tribute will be held tomorrow; 3 July at the Pretoria City Hall where leaders of government, the Diplomatic Corps, families of victims, civil society will gather to show remorse and commit to ensuring that such acts of violence are never repeated.
Government is working in partnership with religious and civil society leaders in ensuring sustained peaceful co-existence. Government's ongoing efforts to reintegrate foreign nationals include the promotion of the return of the displaced people to their communities. Already a number of those in temporary shelters throughout the country have significantly decreased because people have voluntarily gone back to their homes. They have been welcomed back by members of community.
Over the weekend, starting from Friday, various religious groups are urged to engage their congregations in events that promote welcoming back and accepting those who were displaced. So far there has been co-operation from various communities, including faith based organisations which is an encouraging sign of Ubuntu that exists in South Africa.
We have received confirmation of attendance of the tribute from people from all walks of life who are willing to assist put this behind us. Representatives of families of the victims will also be there.
