Youth summit to offer solutions on road safety

24 June 2008

The Mpumalanga Department of Roads and Transport and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will host the National Road Safety Youth Convention scheduled from 24 to 25 June 2008 in White River, at Bundu Country Lodge.

The convention staged as the country celebrates the Youth Month will actively allow the youth – from across the country – to make inputs on the country's approach to road safety which will be reviewed annually. The youth will also be empowered with road safety precautions after their presentations on findings.

During the convention, 14 youths from each of the country's provinces will be involved in discussions on road safety and thereafter come up with resolutions which will be submitted to the National Minister of Transport and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) for implementation. The youth will also be accompanied by road safety specialists from each of the nine country's provinces.

The Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) - which will be part of the convention - will provide an insight on global road safety youth initiatives. The GRSP is a global institution responsible for bringing together governments and governmental agencies, the private sector and civil society organisations to address road safety issues in countries. It is based in Switzerland.

The convention was initiated due to the discovery of more than 40 percent being constituted by the youth on annual statistics of road fatalities. The first convention was held last year in June at the Centre for Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria.

Therefore, the media is invited to be part of the above-mentioned event that will take place as follows:

Venue: Bundu Country Lodge
