Movement of Democratic Change's (MDC's) withdrawal from the Zimbabwe Presidential runoff

23 June 2008

President Thabo Mbeki has noted the announcement by the Movement of Democratic Change - Tsvangirai (MDC – T) stating its intention to withdraw from the Zimbabwean Presidential election runoff scheduled for Friday, 27 June.

President Mbeki urges both the MDC – T and ZANU-PF to work together in search of a solution to the political challenges in Zimbabwe. Only dialogue between the Zimbabwean political leadership can resolve the political challenges with which our neighbouring country is faced.

In this regard, we welcome remarks made by MDC – T President, Morgan Tsvangirai that the MDC remains willing to engage in dialogue in search of a political solution.
