Minister of Correctional Services Ngconde Balfour appeals for responsible comments that would not demoralise his hard working officials

7 June 2008

Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour has called on leaders and commentators on corrections to refrain from demoralising his hard working officials.

After visiting Pretoria Correctional Centre to apprise himself of the attempted escape by a "highly cunning and dangerous" Annanias Mathe, Minister Balfour said his officials had succeeded to foil Mathe's effort. The highly trained soldier had managed to slip out one hand from his handcuffs but was still in leg chains.

Minister Balfour was briefed by the management and officials of the Correctional Centre and also interviewed Annanias Mathe himself. Mathe had a scuffle in front of his single cell with an un-expecting official who overpowered him, called for help and brought him back to his cell within minutes. He described the incident as a small slip-up by officials whom he described as "human beings". He expressed his confidence in the staff deployed to guard Mathe.

Mathe would have had to pass through seven guarded gates to even get out of the Correctional Centre. The minister said the already tight security measures around the "cunning and dangerous" awaiting trial detainee will again be strengthened.

Earlier reports of Mathe being caught 50 metres from his cell are described as absolute lies that should be rejected with contempt. The minister reiterated his assertion that an overwhelming majority of his officials are dedicated and good workers who had contributed to reducing escapes by 14% between 2006 and 2007, from 95 to 82 escapes.

The head of the centre has been assigned by the Regional Commissioner and Area Commissioner to investigate the slip-up. Mathe is firmly in his cell.
