North West to launch Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) National Youth Service (NYS) programme

Public Works Minister Thoko Didiza and MEC Jerry Thibedi are to launch the EPWP National Youth Service programme in the Bophirima Region. The programme seeks to involve young people in public infrastructure maintenance projects. It was launched nationally in 2007 by Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Minister Didiza.
This was after President Thabo Mbeki's call the same year that the impact of EPWP should be increased in order to intensify the fight against poverty and unemployment. In heeding this call, the national and provincial Department of Public Works incorporated NYS into EPWP to increase the latter's reach.
The NYS was officially launched in 2004 by Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad. It is aimed at supporting nation building through involving young people in the provision of crucial government services, thus giving them giving the skills to access economic opportunities.
