Media statement
25 March 2008
President Thabo Mbeki has officially declared the 2nd of May 2008 as a public holiday throughout the Republic of South Africa. The holiday has been declared in terms of section 2A of the Public Holidays Act no.36 of 1994.
The declaration was a result of a Cabinet decision of 19 March 2008 following proposals from a number of stakeholders, including the unions, to compensate workers for losing a public holiday as a result of Human Rights Day falling on the same day as Good Friday.
The declaration is published in the Government Gazette No 30900 of 20 March 2008 and it is available on the government website www.gov.za.
